Staff Spotlight: Julie Butler, third grade teacher at Van Buren Elementary School - During the third grade’s recent PLTW Stability and Motion: Forces and Interactions unit, Julie Butler went above and beyond to make sure all third graders weren't just reading about physics. She reached out to Syracuse University and arranged for aerospace engineering students to visit Van Buren and lend a hand with their culminating project. As part of the unit, students designed and built a compound machine to safely lift a tiger out of a zoo moat, applying their understanding of forces, motion, and simple machines to their design and engineering skills. Thanks to Mrs. Butler's initiative, Van Buren students didn’t just learn about physics, they became problem solvers, innovators and real life engineers.

A. Board Round Table
The Board will engage in a discussion related to Policy 8242 - Civility, Citizenship and Character Education. Board members discussed Policy 8242 with a focus on civility, fairness, and alignment with existing laws and the Code of Conduct. Several members emphasized that expectations for respect, safety, and dignity should apply to all individuals, while also noting the importance of complying with state law, including DASA (801a). Discussion included clarification of how “character” is defined and applied within both the policy and the Code of Conduct, as well as potential overlap between the two. Administration noted the policy has not been updated in some time and requested Board direction on whether to revise or retire it, with the option to bring a motion forward.
B. Resolution to Retire Policy 8242
Motion by Andrew Henty, second by Christina Pavetto that the Board of Education approve the retirement of Policy 8242.
Board discussion focused on proposed changes related to civility and the difficulty of clearly defining the term. Clarification was made that the motion under consideration pertains to the original version of Policy 8242.
