Mr. Mirizio stated that the Policy Committee will not have a meeting this month, the next meeting
will take place on June 9th. Mr Crabtree reported that the Legislative Committee will meet on
Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Discussion items will include ongoing legislative priorities and related matters, including materials that have been distributed.
Board members were encouraged to engage with the community regarding the importance of the school budget and continued advocacy efforts.
Mr. Crabtree gave an update was provided regarding the New York State budget, noting that a final budget has not yet been adopted and that an additional extender has been issued. The Superintendent indicated that, as previously discussed, the issues outlined at the last meeting remain unchanged and that the current legislative session continues to be challenging.
SUPERINTENDENT Dr. Ward began by thanking all presenters from the evening, with specific recognition of the SST
and MTSS teams. It was noted that these frameworks represent a significant focus for the district moving forward and are key components in supporting student success. The Superintendent emphasized the importance of continued investment in these processes and thanked staff for their ongoing work.
Dr. Ward then shared that he recently attended the Cicero–North Syracuse Chamber of Commerce Student Awards Dinner for the first time. He expressed appreciation to the Chamber of Commerce and acknowledged David Babikian for serving as emcee for the event. He also recognized a student, Brigid, who was honored with an award that evening. The Superintendent described the event as a positive and enjoyable experience and extended thanks to all involved in its coordination.
Lastly, Dr. Ward reflected on common public perceptions of “kids these days,” noting that such statements are often negative in nature. He indicated that a video would be shared to help “redefine kids these days” in a more positive light.
Mr. Farfaglia provided a reminder regarding the previously approved sponsorship of a
“Dollars for Scholars” sign. Board members were asked to contribute $20 per member, with follow-up communication to be sent to ensure collection and completion of the sponsorship.
Mr. Crabtree also suggested items for future Executive Committee presentations, including a potential presentation on the district’s credit recovery program. The importance of revisiting programs not recently reviewed by the Committee was noted.
Mr. Crabtree member shared positive feedback from a recent visit to the high school “Adulting Class,” recognizing staff member Jamie Sullivan for her leadership in developing and expanding the course. The program was described as providing students with practical life skills, including financial literacy, resume writing, and interview preparation. Mr. Crabtree member noted student engagement and expressed enthusiasm for the program’s continued growth.
Mr. Crabtree stated he was able to attend the recent esports playoff event at the university level, noting participation by district teams. The junior high team competed against Regular Meeting of the Board of Education 533
Penfield, while the high school team achieved success against Auburn. Additional results were pending at the time of the report.
Mr. Crabtree also shared updates from recent athletic events, including tennis, lacrosse, and girls’ and boys’ sports programs. Recognition was given to the newly completed tennis courts and signage, which were positively received. Mr. Crabtree noted strong participation and performance across multiple athletic programs.
A reminder was shared regarding the upcoming budget vote on May 19, with the Board member noting conversations with community members during recent school events.
Mr. Crabtree expressed appreciation to the Superintendent and district administration for successfully developing and presenting the budget despite the continued absence of a finalized state budget. The challenges of annual timing delays in state aid information were acknowledged.
Finally, it was noted that the next Board of Education meeting will be held on a Tuesday and will include the required budget hearing prior to the regular meeting.

A request has been received from Gillette Road Middle School Principal Sarah Jones asking for the creation of an extra classroom account for the Community Club. The account will be used to manage funds related to fundraising for service activities of the Club, such as purchasing equipment and supplies for donation to not for profit organizations with which they work. The Board is asked to approve the extra classroom account for the Community Club at Gillette Road Middle School.

The Policy Committee met on April 14, 2026 and reviewed Policy 5840-Artificial Intelligence. The committee has recommended the approval of the 2nd reading and formal adoption of this policy.
